Getting Your Charkii Fired Up

This is where your Charkii Braai Box truly shines.
Unlike a full-sized backyard braai, its compact stainless-steel design
changes the game—making control, airflow, and fuel efficiency far
more important than simply chasing maximum heat.

How to use the Charkii Charcoal Bag

Charkii Charcoal Bag

The Charkii Charcoal Bag was created to make using your Charkii Mini Braai easier, faster, and more convenient. After testing and experimenting with different braai setups, we’ve put together the ideal blend of charcoal and wood to help you get a strong, reliable fire with minimal effort.

Each bag contains the right amount of fuel to give you the perfect fire start and can comfortably cook up to 2kg of meat on a single bag, and potentially more, depending on the type of cuts and how you choose to cook.

Whether you’re braaiing at home, camping, or cooking outdoors with mates, the Charkii Charcoal Bag takes the guesswork out of getting your fire going.

How to Use the Charkii Charcoal Bag

  1. Place the charcoal bag into the braai box.

  2. Open the bag and place a few Samba Natural Firelighters into the coals.
We recommend using 4 small cubes.

  3. Light the firelighters and let them burn for about 1 minute before gently stacking some of the coals around and on top of them.

  4. While the fire gets going, set up your braai tools, serving dishes, and maybe pour yourself a drink.

  5. After about 15 minutes, check the fire and start spreading the coals evenly.
If you’re cooking different cuts of meat, create:

    • a hot zone on one side for searing, and

    • a cooler zone on the other for slower cooking.

  6. Keep an eye on the fire and make sure the heat is spread evenly across the braai box.

  7. If you have a small blower, use it to clear away unwanted ash or any leftover paper.

  8. Once the coals are ready and the heat is even, you’re ready to cook.

  9. If you’re cooking steak and want a great sear, place it over the hottest part of the fire first.

Best Fuel Strategy for the Charkii Braai Box

Charcoal isn’t just burnt wood—it’s actually made by heating wood in a low-oxygen environment until it becomes almost pure carbon (called char).

That’s why it works so well:

  • Burns hotter than regular wood

  • Delivers serious cooking energy

  • Creates that signature smoky braai flavour—especially when fat and juices hit the coals

                           Understanding Your Fuel

Lump Charcoal — Pure, powerful, and flavour-packed

Lump charcoal is made from natural hardwood like oak, hickory, or maple. No fillers—just real wood turned into carbon.

Why it’s a favourite:

  • Burns hot and clean

  • Produces less ash (better airflow in a compact braai)

  • Delivers a more natural smoky flavour

  • Large chunks can often be reused

“Pound for pound, lump gives the best flavour and strong heat.”

The trade-offs:

  • Random chunk sizes = less predictable

  • Can be tricky for beginners to measure

  • Burns faster if not managed properly

Briquettes — Consistent and easy to control

Briquettes are a manufactured fuel, made from compressed wood by-products.

They often include small amounts of:

  • Cornstarch (binder)

  • Sodium nitrate (helps ignition)

  • Limestone (stability)

Why people use them:

  • Uniform shape = predictable burn

  • Easy to stack and light

  • Great for steady, longer cooks

The trade-offs:

  • Can produce more ash

  • Additives may give off a slight smell before fully lit

  • Lower peak heat compared to lump (in most cases)

That said, many cooks still reach for briquettes when they want reliable, fuss-free grilling.

                         Wood — The flavour king

Nothing beats proper hardwood for that authentic braai taste.

  • Produces rich, smoky flavour

  • Creates a proper coal bed over time

  • The most traditional way to braai

But, in a compact unit like yours:

  • Takes longer to get going

  • Harder to control heat

  • Better used strategically, not as the main fuel

The Charkii Advantage (Where Charkii shines)

Your Charkii Braai Box is compact and crafted from stainless steel, which means airflow and fuel efficiency matter far more than they do in a large, open braai.

That changes the game:

  • Too much ash = blocked airflow

  • Too much fuel = overheating

  • Poor fuel choice = inconsistent cooking

                   The Charkii Fuel Method

“The Charkii 3-Layer Method”

1. Base — Wood (flavour)
Start with 1–2 small hardwood chunks

2. Core — Lump Charcoal (heat)
Your main fuel source (60–70%)

3. Control — Briquettes (stability)
Add a small amount (20–30%) for consistent temp

Light from one side to create:

  • Hot zone (searing)

  • Medium zone (cooking)

  • Cool zone (resting)

When to Use What

Fast, no-fuss braai

  • 100% lump charcoal

  • Ready in ~10–15 minutes

  • Perfect for steaks, chops, wors

Controlled cooking

  • Lump + briquettes

  • Better heat management

  • Ideal for chicken or thicker cuts

Proper flavour braai

  • Wood + lump charcoal

  • Add a wood chunk during cooking

  • Maximum smoky flavour

Don’t Ignore This (Most people get it wrong)

Ash kills performance

No matter what fuel you use, ash build-up WILL:

  • Block airflow

  • Reduce heat

  • Cause uneven cooking

The number 1 rule:
Clean your braai before every cook

Charcoal needs oxygen to burn properly—if ash blocks airflow, your fire struggles.

The bottom line

  • Lump charcoal = heat + flavour

  • Briquettes = control + consistency

  • Wood = authentic smoke flavour

The Charkii Braai Box unlocks the full potential of your fuel—high heat from lump charcoal, steady control from briquettes, and that unmistakable real wood flavour.
